New My Morning Jacket

I wanted to go on record and say that the new My Morning Jacket album, 'Evil Urges' is as good or better than anything they have recorded to date. More mellow as a whole, and the band is even tinkering around with some electronic sounds...but worry not, it is still at heart a rock n roll record, and Jim James has raised the level of his songwriting yet again.

Here is one of my favorites from the album, which hits stores in early June.

I have played this track an obscene amount of times over the last 3 days. I can't help it. I am just a sucker for these 'next big thing' British bands. Especially when they seem to be so heavily inspired by the Gang Of Four, like these lads appear to be.

Coacheall artist a day...8 days to go

I got totally sidetracked by new music yesterday, thereby forgetting to post my daily Coachella-attending artist...so I guess I owe you two now. No problem.

First up is My Morning Jacket...a band that I am dying to see live again. They absolutely burned down the stage at Lolla last year, and I wouldn't miss this set for anything. 'Evelyn Is Not Real' is off of their Tennessee Fire release.

And for the other artist, I think I will go with Black Mountain...a band I am just getting into, but they are shooting up my list of 'sets not to miss'.

Ok, today's Coachella band is brought to you by the Reunion department of the festival. Every year the wonderful people at Coachella talk some amazing bands into getting together to play their little party in the desert. Money is such an amazing motivator. But motivation be damned, I could care less what it is that gets them there...I just know that over the last 3 years I have seen New Order, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Crowded House, and a handful of other bands that I never thought I'd have the chance to see.

And in a couple of weeks, Love And Rockets can be added to this short list. So here are a couple from these modern rock legends...enjoy.

I have been thinking about my future a great deal with the woman I have been in love with for a few years now. I have come to find out she has betrayed and lied to me a great deal. She has made up reasons she needed to be away from me in order to quench her thirst for sex with other men. She has stayed in a hotel with another man days after helping her get her own place and move. She has joined dating sites, and utilized this site to find men to satisfy her needs. All I have ever given her is love and support.

Are there any real, truthful, honest and caring women left in this world? I hope so, and would love to find one to make me not so cynical.

Your skin glows like the mango,

The evening floats in on a great minah wing.
I am comforted by your shoe that I carry
into the twilight of lunchboxbeams
and hold next to my toenail.
I am filled with hope
that I may dry your tears of iced tea.
As my leg falls from my sweater,
it reminds me of your blender.
In the quiet, I listen for the last scream of the day.
My heated finger leaps to my dress.
I wait in the moonlight for your secret ugly so that we may run
as one, finger to finger, in search of the magnificient gray
and mystical paper towel of love.

Yet another song from my formative rock years. I think I first heard Better Than Ezra's 'Deluxe' album in 1995, when I was still transitioning from listening to hip hop and bad metal into more of what I listen to now(read - better music.)

Stone Temple Pilots are eligible bachelors

If anyone doubted that the reforming of the Stone Temple Pilots was indeed a NON EVENT, then just take a longer look at the show they chose to come back with. As a resident of Columbus,OH...I can assure you that the Rock On The Range Festival is not, in any way good. Lots of bad metal on the lineup and STP. I wouldn't say I am excited that they are reuniting, more like I am feeling just a big nostalgic. Like hearing an ex girlfriend that you dated, but never loved, is back in town.

To the dunk/high guy with hiccups

Dear drunk/high guy with hiccups,

I am not a very happy person and I have a lot of problems. So the day that I met you, I was at the mall, simply overjoyed to be out of my house (with a little bit of sunshine in my purse). And I wandered the mall, slowly making the way through the store. Walking into store after store I started thinking, What's the point? Why is everyone wasting this much time trying to be fancy and pretty, when deep inside, all of us know that we aren't. Hours passed like this, hours of people watching, and just as I gave up I made my way into your store. I sat in the front for a long while, smelling opium incense. It was then that you stumbled in. You smiled a lopsided smile at the cashier and asked him about the earing he had on display. You seemed excited by all the things you saw there, and I was excited that you were there. You leaned over to a display and from across the room I heard a quiet noise. A quiet, but very happy noise. *Hiccup!*
I tried so hard not to laugh but you still heard my stifled giggle. And you laughed out loud upon seeing me. It was then that our game began. We would glance at each other while wandering the store, until *Hiccup!*. Then we would giggle and the game would begin again.
I swear you saved my life drunk/high guy with hiccups.

She is barely older then your youngest child

I’m having a difficult time understanding how you can date a woman half your age who does not have anything in common with you what so ever. I don’t care how sexy or exciting she may seem to you, what do you two really have to discuss or share. Your children are grown, you have nurtured them into adulthood and they have become responsible members of our society. She is just a bit older then your youngest, she is from a questionable background. Although I am not a snob I have to wonder what she really wants from you. Why isn’t she interested in a young man either her own age or a bit older, rather then a man twice her age. In most relationships likes yours the woman is looking for monetary support, or has a need to be with someone of power. I have to also question why you are so insecure with who you are that you need this kind of a relationship. This is not something new for you. You have repeated this same sort of behavior before always to be hurt or left disappointed. You haven’t learned anything from your past You are my friend, someone that I feel I can tell the most intimate and important things in my life, knowing you will not divulge my secrets or criticize me. We are comfortable with each other. I was really hoping this comfort would grow into something much more.

******

dear uterus,

i am writing in an attempt to apologize in advance for the lonely years ahead for you. before you start, let me at least state my case.

you see, i have spent many hours observing all of the things that people do. and the stupidity of humans, as it relates to the upbringing of offspring, is no longer of any surprise to me. the values that humans try to instill in their young are mute in comparison to the volume of their actions.

example: why, why, would you allow your elementary aged daughter to wear a bikini?

the point is not the sexual preditor's out there, but the sexualization of our daughters. what are girls who have no concept of sexuality yet doing in sexualized clothing?

you see, dear uterus, i can not let you begin a little girl's life if a single second of her innocence can be sexually objectified. do not get your hopes up ute, this does not mean that i want to raise a man. i wouldn't even know how to begin reversing the things he would learn during his first day of school.

can you imagine trying to teach a hormonal teenage boy about racial inequality?

a woman's right to choose?

the bush administration?

sigh.

yes, i know, i don't have to do it alone. but you haven't seen what it's like on the other side of those walls(yes, that was a pun). for the most part they are emotionally or mentally handicapped. they were once little boys raised by parents who shouldn't have been parents; by women who should have had the conversation we're having right now.

oh fine, yes, great men are out there, they are doing great things, for great reasons, and not being led around by their dicks. but do you know what they are? workaholics.

yes, i could do it alone. have you any idea how hard it is to find competence in anything? the world is full of mutants; people who consume cheap disposable things for status. people who kill animals for fiscal gain. people who willingly spend hours of their life inside wal-mart.

no, uterus of mine, i am sorry that i will not know of your awe-inspiring capabilities, but it is just not our time.

it is just not our time.

I spend a lot of time near the end of the year scouring best of lists, looking for albums that slipped by me during the preceding 12 months...one of my favorites is the NPR 'All Songs Considered' list. They always have such eclectic picks, I pull one or two albums out of that list every year that I listen into the ground. A few years ago Paddy Casey's debut 'Amen(So Be It) was one of those records. And recently the Irish singer/songwriter just released his 3rd record, 'Addicted To Company Pt 1'.

There is this sub-genre of missed connections that I have noticed that are like a study in severe conflict avoidance. Rather than talk to the person, they post a vague, general overview of their relationship's failings on craislist...and wonder why they are still single(says the guy who is single...but I know why!)?

Not to mention this describes like HALF of all new relationships...they just fizzle out...man, if every single person in this situation posted, I would never be able to read them all!
