"When you have no one, No one can hurt you"
As soon as I heard Mark Lanegan sing these lyrics on the tune 'You Will Miss Me When I Burn' I wondered what took Lanegan SO LONG to cover Will Oldham(the song is a Palace Brothers original). Lanegan's trademark brooding vocals work so incredibly well with Oldham's knack for writing gorgeously downtrodden songs. And this song doesn't dissapoint.
This tune as well as Langegan colloborations with such talent as Mike Patton, Gibby Haynes, and several others can be found on the brand new Soulsavers record, aptly titled 'Broken.'

If you had told me when I was 18 that in fifteen years I'd be listening to MULTIPLE bands that incorporate the use of a banjo into their sound, I would have laughed at you.
Fast forward to 2008 and here I sit, loving all of these new bluegrass, or alt-grass, revival bands...the stuff is just good for the soul. Lately, I have been devouring a band from Boston called Crooked Still. They have a brand new record out called, beautifully, 'Still Crooked' which I haven't picked up yet. But I still wanted to pass a couple of songs along...here is one of my favorites off of their 'Shaken By A Low Sound' album, which came out in 2006. Oh, and they do a cool version of the American folk classic 'Little Sadie'...which reminded me how much I love the Mark Lanegan version, so I will throw that up too. Enjoy.

Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell. Seriously. This album, '
Sunday At Devil Dirt' should be sold with a bottle of whiskey. Melancholy brilliance.

So sad that I am a 30 something...but at least I have this record to ease the pain.

Mark Lanegan could probably sing names out of the phone book and I would be blown away. His gravelly voice has always been one of my favorites...and it is aging SO well. You will know what I mean if you listen to his latest project, Soulsavers. But I digress. Today I dusted off 1992's 'Sweet Oblivion.'

Such a great time capsule record. I press play and its like I am transported back to the days when Abercrombie & Fitch were selling flannel shirts and jeans with holes in them, yes...the grunge years.
'Nearly Lost You', 'Dollar Bill', and my all time favorite Trees track, the album ending 'Julie Paradise' are my favorites off of this one...but the entire disc is pretty spectacular...just watch out for that flashback jet lag.
