I was 5 when John Lennon was killed, and as I look back I think that was the first time that I can ever remember seeing my mom cry. Twenty nine years later and it's still so sad to think about how much he could have accomplished had he not been taken from us.

Just wanted to pass on some Lennon's timeless music today...

The New Protest Songs: "Gimme Some Truth"

Only 3 days left! And can I say that this election can not come soon enough. It's brutal living in a battleground state during the electoral process. Last night, and I am not making this up, I got a phone call from Pat Boone(it was recorded, but still super creepy) begging me to vote for McCain. Which I will now do. Seriously, I have been a huge Obama backer since the primaries but this one phone call from the totally relevant Pat Boone has swayed me. Nice strategy Republican party...brilliant.

How about some Pearl Jam covering John Lennon...

What the last 8 years have sounded like

Eddie Vedder executive produced this soundtrack to the Iraq war documentary 'Body Of War'...although the album and its 30 songs serve equally well as a soundtrack for the last 8, long years.

This album needs to be put in some sort of time capsule and set aside for us when it is time to explain to our grandkids HOW this current administration could have POSSIBLY been elected...twice!

Here are three beautiful examples of the kind of genre hopping protest music that make up the compilation:

Bright Eyes - 'When The President Talks To God' MP3

John Lennon - 'Gimme Some Truth' MP3

Public Enemy - 'Son Of Bush' MP3

One for the 'Who woulda thunk it?' department.

I was sitting in this little Hollywood coffee shop over the weekend and I saw Jerry O Connell. Which got me to thinking...if you would have asked me the year 'Stand By Me' was released which one of the kids in the movie would grow up to have the best career...Jerry O'Connell probably would have been last on my list.

Not his fault, but at the time Corey Feldman was pretty huge, as was River Phoenix, and even Will Wheton seemed destined for bigger things than old Verne. But he stayed sane, he stayed grounded, and he stayed alive...and he has done really well for himself.

I think all of this is just an excuse to post a classic John Lennon cover. But I do adore this movie. It's like nostalgia on celluloid.
