File Under "F" For Fun

Do we need a SECOND volume of covers from 90's power popper Matthew Sweet and former Bangle Susanna Hoffs? Probably not. But since I didn't have a say in the matter and the record is already out,I will enjoy it for what it is - fun.

Sure you know what's coming with every single song...but that's ok. I like to think of it as the musical equivalent of a mindless Wil Smith movie. You know in one of those lots of stuff will blow up and in the end, Mr. Smith will save the world. And on one of these records, some great old songs are going to get the sugary sweet power pop treatment from Sweet and Hoffs...just sit back and enjoy...just don't think too deeply on it - no need to.

Plus, EVERY generation deserves an update on this bitter classic:

Audio Nostalgia: Matthew Sweet

If my memory is correct, I do believe that Matthew Sweet's 'Girlfriend' was the first singer/songwriter album I ever bought. For some reason I thought only bands could make music for the longest time. Have I mentioned before how I was a late bloomer, musically speaking?

I was just thinking about this album and this song the other day...and thought I would post it.

Underrated Uses Of Music In Film: Episode #11

Russel from Stillwater parties with real Topeka people.

Obligatory 'Almost Famous' entry into this list. Even more so than the famous 'Tiny Dancer' scene, this scene, where Russel and William decide to take in some REAL Topeka nightlife, speaks to me! Maybe it's because I have always wondered what I would do if one of my favorite rock stars came to a house party I was at and got totally messed up on acid. I do know that the Neil Young song that blasts to life as he walks into the party is just the perfect soundtrack for a 1973 Kansas throwdown.

Velvet Underground songs NEVER sound wrong

I am such a sucker for Velvet Underground songs. No matter who is covering them. This is one of my favorites. Matthew Sweet and former Bangle Susanna Hoffs doing 'Sunday Morning'...Lou Reed never sounded so sweet.
