I wanna be your Keith Moon
I dig drummers. I love that even while they are the backbone of the band, they are content to hang back, play themselves into a frenzy, all the while the lead singer and the guitar player are reaping the rewards of being rock stars - front stage and center. There is an irrepressible cool about that.
My brain isn't the most finely honed brain in the game, I am afraid. When I hear a song, I hear just that...a song. Some people are really good at deconstructing what they hear, like specific guitar parts or basslines...I sort of hear the whole thing at once. So when I do notice something specific musically, I startle myself. This happened the other day while my friend Henry and I were talking about the record 'You Follow Me' from Nina Nastasia and Jim White. As great as the words are in these songs, it's the percussion that drives the whole sound forward. The words sort of fit around the pulsating beats that Jim White bangs out...even on the slower songs like the one I will post, the drums are what hold the songs together. I have been listening to this all day and wishing I was a drummer.

I love drummers too. and bass players.
I'm definitely one of those people who likes to pick out different parts of a song, but I do like to sit back and listen to it as a whole. what really got me to hone my skills for doing the former is listening to the Strokes. somehow, it isn't possible not to hear each individual band member, yet everything simultaneously. give Is This It a listen.
EVERY girl I have ever met has a thing for bass players...really!
oh let me clarify then,
I have a thing for GOOD bass players. and they're pretty rare, them.
bass guitar is my favourite instrument. it can be SO powerful and subtle at the same time. loove it.
Favorite bass player?(who is NOT in the Strokes)
haha good disclaimer, my favourite, is of course, Nikolai of The Strokes (he is a genius!) but runners up would be Nick from the Virgins and Fred from Television

I need to go on record...my favorite bassist is Kathy Foster, from the Thermals
Thank you Thank you...The Virgins are a band that i keep hearing about and wanting to check out, but never get around to...but after that clip Iam sold
speaking of killer bass playing chicks, have you heard of Audrye Sessions? they rock.
also, if you want I can send you the Virgins record. I love it to death.
Send...always send...if in doubt, send!

the entire record is sweet, sweet perfection, but my absolute favourites are "One Week of Danger", "Hey Hey Girl" and "Radio Christine". "Teen Lovers" is amazing too.
I really prefer the EP version of Rich Girls, so I'm sending you that as well
